Pilates exercises work on first strengthening the core muscles, especially the abdominals, then toning and strengthening the global muscles, mobilising the joints and improving the posture.  Focusing the mind on the body brings an awareness of how the muscles function and using the breath creates a flow of movement, releasing unnecessary tension.  The exercises are precise and controlled, making Pilates suitable for all ages and fitness levels - assisting athletes achieve better results, helping those recovering from injury, as well as people starting exercise for the first time or after a long break.  Pilates is also suitable for pregnant women.
This approach to exercise appealed to Sandra, who attended classes for seven years, while living in London. Deciding she wanted to teach, she completed a one year course through the Pilates Foundation. She has been teaching Pilates for 6 years and has a studio in Palmer Road, Muizenberg and in Simons’ Town.
